OTTAWA — A national Chinese supermarket chain in Canada with stores in B.C., Alberta and Ontario has voluntarily recalled two yogurt drink brands from its shelves after a recent tainted baby milk scandal in China has killed four infants.
An official with the Canadian Food and Inspection Agency said Friday the Vancouver-based T&T Supermarket pulled the yogurt drinks as a precaution because they have the same brand names included in the recall overseas. The major chain has 16 locations across Canada including in Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. No illnesses have been reported from the yogurt drinks.
The agency said recent testing of Chinese milk products at 300 stores nationwide show that none of them were tainted. In fact, the agency said it's believe none of the tainted products were exported to Canada.
Investigators with the agency are continuing to do random testing on products to ensure that they are safe.
So far, no warnings or recalls have been issued in Canada.
Meanwhile, in China, police are investigating after four babies died and as many as 158 critically injured, suffering from acute kidney failure from drinking melamine-laced baby formula. More than 6,000 infants are sick nationwide.
The recall on the milk products initially including instant milk and powdered milk in China was expanded Friday to include three brands of liquid milk.
It's believed the tainted milk was laced with melamine to artificially boost its protein content.
The chemical, usually used in plastics, is causing infants to develop kidney stones which, left untreated, cause renal failure and death.
