Four new flicks opening in theatres

Vera Farmiga stars in 'The Conjuring.'. Handout

TORONTO — Looking to beat the summer heat by settling into an air-conditioned movie theatre with a refreshing beverage and tub of popcorn? This weekend’s new options include action, comedy, fantasy and horror.

Bruce Willis reteams with John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and Helen Mirren for Red 2, a sequel to 2010’s made-in-Toronto $200 million hit.

This time, the retired black-ops agents go in search of a missing nuclear device. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins join the cast.

Although some scenes were shot overseas, most of the action in Red 2 was filmed in Montreal.

Also opening is Girl Most Likely, a comedy starring Kristen Wiig as a New York playwright who moves back home to New Jersey when her career and personal life stall — only to discover two strange men (Matt Dillon and Glee‘s Darren Criss) have moved in.

Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds stars opposite Jeff Bridges in the crime caper R.I.P.D.

The B.C. native plays a recently deceased cop who joins a team of “undead” officers in the Rest in Peace Department to track down his killer.

Red 2‘s Parker also stars in R.I.P.D., as well as Kevin Bacon.

Movie-goers who prefer frights to fights can check out The Conjuring, a thriller starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators helping a family dealing with dark forces in their rural home.

The movie, which also stars Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston, was directed by James Wan (Saw, Insidious).

The four new releases will challenge last weekend’s box office champs — Despicable Me 2, Grown Ups 2 and Pacific Rim — which raked in a combined $124 million.
