Wanted: Worthy recipients for new bikes

Sun Youth is seeking worthy recipients for 50 new bicycles.

Every spring, the organization holds its annual Bicycle Giveaway, a program supported by an anonymous donor.

Over the past 26 years, the organization has given away more than 1,000 new bicycles to needy young people.

But this year, Sun Youth has only received the names of 20 kids for a new bike.

Organizers say major events taking place in Japan, Libya, Egypt and elsewhere may have had an effect this year’s bike program.

By this time last year, Sun Youth had received the names of 280 children for new bikes.

The organization is encouraging teachers, social workers, neighbours, parents and police officers to come forward with the names of children, aged 7-15, who deserve a new bicycle.

The deadline for nominations is March 31.

Submissions should be 50-60 words in length and explain why the child is worthy of the bike.

Those selected will also receive a helmet and lock.
