Insp. Darren Alldrit told reporters emergency crews were called to the building on Driftwood Avenue near Yorkwoods Gate, east of Jane Street, just before 5:25 p.m. by a passerby who found the boy on the ground.

“We’re confident the child probably did fall from the balcony or the window of this building and we believe it is on the 14th floor,” he said.

The boy was rushed to a trauma centre by paramedics in critical condition, police said, but he later died.

“The mother is aware of this incident and at the hospital with the child,” Alldrit said.

The circumstances leading up to the boy’s fall were unclear as of Tuesday evening.

Alldrit said 31 Division investigators were canvassing the building to try to speak with witnesses.
