UPDATE: Arrest made in death of toddler at southeast day home

CALGARY- An arrest has been made in the sudden death of a toddler at a southeast day home.

Mackenzy Woolfsmith was just a few months away from celebrating her second birthday, when she was injured in May 2012. She was rushed to hospital, but died the next day.

Initial reports were that she fell down a set of stairs, but after consulting with the medical examiner and other experts it was determined she died as a result of multiple blunt force trauma.

On Tuesday, the woman who operated the day home in McKenzie Towne, Caitlin Jarosz, was arrested at her workplace. Her lawyer says she has since been charged with second-degree murder.

“It’s tough, she’s got no [criminal] history, she’s not that old and now she’s been arrested at work,” says defence lawyer Alain Hepner.

Jarosz is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
