LAVAL, Que. – Provincial police divers joined the search Friday for a woman who drowned while fetching her sandals in a river in Laval, Que.
Authorities said the 34-year-old woman was swept away in the Riviere des Prairies at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Four witnesses dove into the river to try to rescue the woman but were unsuccessful.
About 30 police officers, firefighters and other emergency workers then spent more than three hours searching the river, but had to stop when darkness fell.
Laval police spokesman Franco Di Genova said the only item they were able to recover were the woman’s sandals.
Her name has not been released.
