Wave of debris floods Calgary landfills

CALGARY-  With the flood cleanup still in progress, 50 thousand tonnes of debris have been dumped in city landfills so far.

That’s the equivalent of an entire year of waste from construction and renovations.

The city department in charge of waste and recycling has been working steadily since the floods, with the aid of thousands of volunteers who have been helping  haul debris to the landfills.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We are hearing a lot of stories about heroes coming out of the flood disaster,” says the city’s David Griffith. “But today we wanted to bring you the story of about 300 people who work for Waste and Recycling, true heroes in this flood.”

Griffiths says the flow of garbage has started to subside after more than two weeks and 15,000 trips.

”We are hopeful we are over the worst of it,” he says. “I just can’t say enough about how proud I am about what our staff was able to contribute, to try and help residents that were so impacted.”
