The historic U.N. Climate Conference is underway in Copenhagen. Delegates from 192 countries will try to hammer out a deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions and prevent the dangerous rise of global temperatures.
Developing countries like India say rich nations, such as Canada, have the responsibility to make the deepest cuts because they have emitted the most carbon in the past 150 years and still emit the most per capita.
But emissions from emerging economies such as India and China are surging, and any global limit on greenhouse gases needs to put curbs on those nations too. India has offered to cut its carbon ‘intensity’ by 24% by 2020. That means it will only slow the increase of carbon emissions not cut them.
Global National‘s Foreign Editor Stuart Greer speaks to South Asia Correspondent Jas Johal about why India is not ready to make big carbon cuts.
