Province commits $22 million for flood prevention

The province is committing $22 million to prevent a repeat of last year when severe flooding the wreaked havoc on southern Saskatchewan.

The Emergency Flood Reduction program, a joint venture between the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority and the province, will provide technical and financial assistance to protect homes and other structures against flood damage.

This comes following a prediction from the Watershed Authority, saying flooding is highly likely again this year.

"There are several hundred farmyards and rural residences at flood risk in rural municipalities," Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities president David Marit said in a news release. "This program will help those individuals to protect themselves and their property."

Flooding is once again predicted to be an issue this year, following a winter with heavy snowfall and already water-logged properties.

The program will province 100 per cent support for engineering to design things like berms and clearing out channels.
