A new program introduced by SaskPower aims to reduce the electricity used by block heaters in parking lots.

Building owners are encouraged to install parking lot controllers, which regulate how much electricity is delivered to an outdoor plug based on the temperature. SaskPower is offering a $50 rebate per stall when the controllers are installed.

“Installing parking lot controllers could help building owners in both rural and urban areas of the province reduce their parking lot electricity costs by up to 50 per cent,” Minister responsible for SaskPower, Rob Norris, said in a news release.

Saskatchewan has around 150,000 electrified parking stalls. SaskPower hopes 50,000 controllers will be installed over the next five years. The Crown Corporation believes enough electricity will be saved through the initiative to power 2,000 homes.

The program is available to anyone who operates an electrified parking lot in Saskatchewan.
