Internet scam targets Wilcox residents

Internet scam targets Wilcox residents - image

The RCMP are slowly trying to track down the source of an internet scam that’s targeting local residents selling items online in the Wilcox area.

The latest is targeting a resident selling an item on UsedRegina.com. The scam takes place when the buyer arranges to pay for the item through a bank draft. They tell the buyer that since they’re arranging to have someone else pick the item up on their behalf, they will send more money than the asking price for the item, and ask that the extra is given to the person picking the item up. When the seller goes to cash the draft they discover it’s a fake.

This is the third scam targeting Wilcox residents in the past year. In the latest incident, the bank draft was mailed prior to the item being picked up so the seller still has their item.

Police are trying to track down the source of the fake bank draft through internet IP addresses and tracking the source of the bank draft via the courier.

“We attempt to track these guys down, but it does prove to be quite challenging,” said Sgt. Tom Stewart of the Milestone RCMP.

The police are asking the public to visit the website http://www.phonebusters.com, which has information on the latest scams.

Anyone with information is being asked to the call the Milestone RCMP at 306-436-6250, Crime Stoppers at 1800-222-TIPS or Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501.
