Regina Transit Director Onodera dismissed

Regina’s Transit Director David Onodera is no longer employed by the city.

The timing caught many off-guard, as Onodera received high praise from Mayor Pat Fiacco during the City of Regina’s Year in Review speech, which was just hours before Onodera was dismissed.

“A lot of credit should be given to David Onodera, our Transit Director, for his leadership in ensuring that our transit moves up in service,” Fiacco said on Wednesday.

There are still a lot of questions surround Onodera’s dismissal. When contacted on Thursday, he would not give details about what happened. Onodera only said he was grateful for the support he received from City Council and the administration during his time.

He was named Transit Director in 2008 and overlooked major developments in the system, including the renewal of the city’s buses and the introduction of the R-Card, a new swipe-card payment system.

Bonny Bryant, general manager of the Community and Protective Services Division, could not say much about Onodera’s dismissal.

“I can’t disclose any of the detail surrounding his departure as I have an obligation to keep personnel matters confidential,” Bryant said. “I can assure you that there have been no improprieties, and it’s simply a change in leadership.”
