Trail restrictions in place in Banff, as bears get set for feeding season

CALGARY- Visitors to Banff National Park are being warned to be on the lookout for bears, as grizzlies get set for feeding season.

Buffaloberries are in season from mid-July through September, and are a vital food source for the bears who eat them to build up fat reserves.

As a result, restrictions have been put into place along Lake Minnewanka Trail, from the Stewart Canyon Bridge to the east park boundary, as well as the Alymer Pass and Alymer Lookout Trails.

Hikers: must walk in tight groups of four or more, and carry bear spray at all times.
Cyclists: not permitted
Dogs: Not permitted

Violators will be charged under National Parks Regulations and could face a fine of up to $25,000.

The restriction is in effect from July 10 to September 15.
