Van explodes outside Port Moody McDonald’s, woman in serious condition

A woman has been taken to hospital with serious burns after her van exploded outside a McDonald’s in Port Moody.

The van was parked at the McDonald’s on St. Johns Street.

According to witnesses, the woman got into the van and then there was an explosion around 1:45 p.m.

The roof of the van was blown off.

Police say it appears the explosion was caused by an unsafe storage of fuel and are calling the incident “an industrial accident.”

Police have cordoned off the area and are interviewing witnesses.

Ellecia Hobbis was working in a building next door and witnessed the explosion.

“The whole building shook, it was a big boom sound, we ran outside to see if someone ran into the building,” she says.

“We saw a painter van with the roof blown off and curled over, and flames coming from it with lots of smoke.”

St. Johns Street is currently shut down both east and westbound between Williams and Buller.

Translink is rerouting buses to go along Williams Street.

Heading Eastbound on St John’s at the far side of Williams, buses won’t be stopping.

Heading Westbound on St John’s at the far side of Buller, buses won’t be stopping.

Service is delayed but comuuters can still go to the Port Moody Station.
