Health Canada warns of illegal garage sale items

Health Canada has issued a warning for those holdings garage sales – some items are illegal to sell.

Anything sold or given away in sales needs to adhere to requirements put forward by Health Canada.

Items including certain baby cribs, certain baby gates, expired car seats and any children’s jewellery containing lead are on that list.

Health Canada does admit, however, those rules are ignored at most garage sales.

Craig Miller was hosting a garage sale on Sunday. He says the onus should be on the buyer as much as the seller.

“You wouldn’t want a lawsuit, being a seller and being a buyer you wouldn’t want an infant to be injured at any point,” Miller said.

Health Canada says the person who is legally responsible is the seller.

Brennan Lott does not think he would purchase anything on the list, anyway.

“I probably wouldn’t buy too much of anything, especially for a baby, unless it was super sanitized. You think of who else had it in their mouth,” Lott said.
