Is your bike helmet safe?

As bike riders hit the paths around Regina, they could be wearing something on their head that is giving them a false sense of security.

Something that could be alarming to cyclists everywhere: bike helmets carry an expiry date with them.

Greg Sutyla from Western Cycle says he finds more people are unaware of that fact.

“You see a lot of people actually wearing helmets sometimes that are 10, 15 years old,” Sutyla said.

He explains most manufacturers recommend replacing helmets every three years. Over time the protective foam can become brittle. Things in the environment like sun exposure, as well as oil in hair and shampoo can break down the foam.

That is not the only concern with older helmets. They may not protect during a collision.

“When you impact,” Sutyla said, “older helmets will just shatter apart.”

George Welbanks was biking around Wascana Park on Friday. He said his helmet is at least 20 years old.

“I’ve been shopping around for one,” Welbanks said. “I intend to get one this year.”

According to Sutyla, a good bike helmet will cost $50.

The cost of preventing serious injury is never too high.
