Bubbling cauldrons, fairies and carnivals – "Magical Madness" is the inspiration for this year’s International Ice Carving Competition, held January 21 to 23 at Lake Louise. With the pristine setting of a frozen mountain lake and a magical theme ruling the carvers’ designs, Ice Magic promises to be something out of the ordinary.
Starting on January 21 at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, twelve teams of two carvers have 34 hours to transform 15 blocks of ice into seven-foot tall ice sculptures. With each block of ice weighing 300lbs, the work requires hard physical labour and a touch of delicate creativity all at the same time.
In the meantime, you can check out ice carving demonstrations with internationally renowned ice carver, Dan Rebholz, your choice of free magic shows, the One Carver, One Hour, One Block individual speed carving event at the Lake Louise Inn, and the Little Chippers Festival at Samson Mall where kids will have a chance to learn the art and science of ice carving first hand, and take part in a host of fun family activities!
Don’t miss the Awards Ceremony on January 23 to find out which carvings win the judges’ coveted vote, and your vote for the People’s Choice Award.
