Inmates caught after escaping Headingley jail

Two inmates escaped Headingley Correctional Centre just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday before being caught by police following a manhunt.

A 39-year-old man was caught by correctional officers at the scene, RCMP said, while a 23-year-old inmate fled from the jail on foot, swimming across the Assiniboine River in a bid to evade police.

He was later captured with the help of RCMP police dogs and the Winnipeg Police Service’s helicopter in Headingley — he had been hiding in a truck. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Winnipeg police sent out a tweet on Saturday evening asking all residents in the town to stay indoors.

Later, police confirmed on Twitter an inmate had been captured shortly before midnight.

Headingley is a small community on the western outskirts of Winnipeg policed by the RCMP. However, city police assist local RCMP when required.

We have reached out to police for comment but have not yet heard back.
