A 22-year-old man is dead after he was shot by Winnipeg police in The Maples after officers responded to an attempted armed robbery shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday.
A second suspect, a 16-year-old, was taken to hospital for minor injuries — not gunshot wounds, Winnipeg police Chief Danny Smyth said at a press briefing — and is now in police custody.
Smyth said officers responded to the 200 block of Adsum Drive after receiving a report of people armed with guns at about 4 a.m.
An area resident had gone to take out his garbage before he was confronted by two armed men who demanded money, police said. He was assaulted, fled the scene and called 911. He was later treated in hospital for minor injuries.
Shortly after, police received a second 911 call. The caller told police someone was breaking windows at a nearby apartment building.
Police searched the area — about 20 minutes later police found the two men near Pipeline Road and Adsum Drive. The men confronted police, Smyth said.
Police shot the 22-year-old.
He was given first aid by police, then taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police found weapons at the scene, Smyth said, but he would not say what kind of weapons they were.
Manitoba’s civilian police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Unit, has now taken over the investigation.
This is the third police shooting in Winnipeg in 10 days.
