Bedbug infestations on the rise in a number of Calgary apartment complexes

Some Calgary residents have discovered some nasty visitors in their apartment building.

Jennifer Ludek arrived home from a trip to discover her studio apartment crawling with bed bugs. She received no warning from her landlord, only an anonymous note slipped under her door from a neighbouring tenant.

The property management company will not reveal how many suites are affected in the complex, but insist they are taking the appropriate precautions by disinfecting parts of the building.

Health authorities confirm they’re investigating this insect infestation as well as others in the city.

By law, landlords are obligated to clean up and control the spread of insects.

Tenants can also check if the property they are living in has ever had a bed bug infestation by visiting the bedbugregistry.com, a free public database that tracks reports of infestations.

So far Alberta Health Services has received close to 100 complaints of pest infestations this year.
