WINNIPEG — If  you think sneakers are just for walking, you have never met a sneakerhead.

A sneakerhead is a hardcore fan of the shoes themselves.

Hundreds of them united at Club Regent Casino for the first Sneaker Swap Expo in Winnipeg.

Frendell Cano created Winnipeg’s Got Sole, a charity that collects shoes for people in need, and thought this event is a way for him to make an even bigger difference in the city.

People were asked to bring in a pair of gently-used shoes, which will be donated  to Siloam Mission, Soles for Souls Canada and Basketball Manitoba.

The event collected nearly 300 pairs of shoes for people who’ve never had the chance to slip on brand name sneakers.

“It’s not just connecting all the sneakerheads and people that are passionate about sneakers,”  said Cano, “it also giving them the opportunity to give back.”

On top of helping others, the event lets shoe aficionados expand their collections.

One of the expo’s crown jewels are a pair of Nike Air Mags. They’re modeled after the ones Micheal J. Fox wore in the movie “Back to the Future 2.”

“It’s very limited release and its hard to get,” said Cano. “So if  you do find one in that condition expect to pay big bucks.”

A pair are selling on Ebay for over $7,000.

Organizers say all money raised from the event goes back into the non-profit Winnipeg’s Got Sole.
