Calgary drivers will need to pay extra attention to school and playground zones in the coming months as the City and Province consider changing the start times.
Currently, school zones are in effect from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. but because more children are now in class by 8:00a.m., the City is thinking about bumping the start time by half an hour to 7:30a.m.
The change would provide some consistency with the Province, which is also proposing a new start time of 7:30a.m.
The Province is also looking at changing playground zones from the current times of 8:30a.m. to one hour after sunset, to 7:30a.m. to 9:00p.m.
“I think it’s all intended to provide consistency for drivers and for kids… I think the more we have consistency and everybody knows what the rules are, the better it is”, says Alderman Bob Hawkesworth.
The City school zone change could be in effect by this fall.
The Province is still reviewing input on its proposed changes.
