The City of Calgary Animal & Bylaw Services will celebrate a highly "paws-itive" pet licensing milestone on Wednesday morning – they have just licensed Calgary’s 100,000th dog.
Calgary now becomes the only Canadian municipality with that many licensed canines. Calgarians are already the top dogs nationally with the highest compliance rate of dog licensing.
Ruby, the lucky pooch that became the city’s 100,000th licensed dog, was recently adopted by her responsible pet owner from a local animal shelter.
In the City of Calgary, all dogs and cats over three months of age are required to have a license. The penalty for not licensing your pet is $250.
Dogs must wear their license tags whenever they are off their owner’s property. Cats that have a microchip or legible tattoo do not need to wear their license tags. Cats must wear their license tags if they have no form of permanent identification, or if they have tattoos that are no longer legible.
The cost of a one-year license:
– for puppies (up to six months old) and altered dogs – $31.00;
– for unaltered dogs – $52.00.
– altered cats – $10.00
– unaltered kittens (up to six months old) – $15.00
– unaltered cats – $30.00
Your animal license fees allow Animal and Bylaw Services to:
– Feed and shelter cats and dogs in a veterinarian inspected facility.
– Provide emergency medical care for injured cats and dogs.
– Operate our adoption program.
– Educate cat and dog owners about responsible pet ownership.
– Help neighbors resolve their animal-related problems.
– Return lost cats and dogs and enforce the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw without requiring funding from city taxes.
