Parklets coming to Church Street

TORONTO – Several parking spots along Church Street will be transformed into small parks – or parklets – this summer.

The parklets will serve as miniscule extensions of parkland in the downtown core along Church Street. Half of the parklets will be licensed and combined with adjacent businesses.

The parklets will be set up in the northbound east curb lane of Church Street between Gloucester Street and Wood Street.

The Toronto and East York Community Council approved the idea on June 18 and will be in place from July 10 to October 20.

A letter from Ward 22 Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam says the parklets are intended to “improve the general pedestrian and retail experience” along the street.

Los Angeles recently implemented a similar idea in February using a former illegal parking spot in front of a body shop at a cost of $30,000.

And in San Francisco, the city government has started renting parking spaces to turn them into parklets.
