Kaiser and staff escape

The former German emperor and his eldest son, Frederick William, crossed the Dutch frontier on Sunday morning, according to The Hague.

The Kaiser and the General Staff, believed to include Field Marshal von Hindenburg, were seen arriving at Eysden on the Dutch border Sunday morning.

Ten heavily-armed automobiles carried the party. The Kaiser himself was spotted in uniform, pacing the platform while smoking a cigarette and chatting with staff.

Several minutes later, an Imperial train with restaurant and sleeping cars arrived at the station with only servants on board.

In Berlin, German provisional authorities are appealing for calm as violent street clashes have spread throughout the provinces.

Revolutionary Workmen’s and Soldiers’ Councils, similar to those organized in Russia, are springing up all over the country.
