UPDATE: Fatal crash on Highway 63 Monday morning

EDMONTON – The RCMP are investigating a fatal collision on Highway 63 at Highway 633 near Boyle that happened early Monday morning.

Around 4 a.m. Monday, a small vehicle travelling on Highway 663 entered Highway 63 and struck the side of a semi tractor trailer hauling gasoline.

Both vehicles caught fire.

The driver of the semi tractor trailer was able to escape the collision with minor injuries.

However, no one in the other vehicle survived the crash.

With the assistance of the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Officer it was determined that there was one person inside the van at the time of the collision.

The 47-year-old male driver of the minivan has been identified and next of kin has been notified.  He is a resident of western Alberta who was working in the Boyle area.

The RCMP will not be releasing the name or home town of the deceased out of respect for the family.

Charges are not being laid in this matter.

Traffic on Highway 63 was rerouted to Highway 831. The detour was in place for several hours while the collision scene was cleared.

Boyle is about 150 kilometres north east of Edmonton.

Highway 63 is the main access route to Fort McMurray.
