Members of the city’s Filipino community are rushing to pack up as many boxes of donated clothing and other essential items before they are shipped to the South East Asian country this weekend.

Close to 30 thousand dollars has been raised so far by the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba.

"We will be sending this money there because they need money right now to buy food, clothing and medicine." said Fred Devilla the co-chair of the Philippine-Disaster Committee.

Less than a week after the country was hit by a typhoon that spawned massive flooding and killed hundreds of people, the Philippines is bracing for another powerful storm.

Typhoon Parma is expected to hit landfall by Saturday.

"The feeling is as if I was there also afraid to what is going to happen next." said Jose Casares who’s worried about his aunt and uncle who live on the Province of Rizal, where most of the devastation occurred after Typhoon struck the country last week.

"They are actually trying to rebuild what is left of their homes and so far it’s really sad." said Casares.

Organizers hope to reach their goal of 50 thousand dollars when the fundraising drive ends tomorrow.
