Fire at animal rendering plant sends smoke through Vancouver

Fire crews are investigating after a container burst into flames at an animal rendering and recycling plant in Vancouver early Saturday morning.

The blaze broke out at around 12:30 a.m. at West Coast Reduction, located at 105 North Commercial Drive.

No one was injured in the fire, but a silo was damaged.  Smoke could be smelled throughout Vancouver during the night. It took crews about 45 minutes to put the blaze out.

Kitsilano resident Chelsea LaRocque said the smell was so strong in her neighbourhood she called the fire department.

“I actually called the fire department from waking up to my entire house smelling of smoke. I go outside and… can barely see it’s so smoky,” she said on the Global BC Facebook page. 

West Coast Reduction recycles inedible animal by-products from the meat, poultry and fish processing industries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
