Caterine Snyder says she made a startling discovery recently, after finding what looks like a piece of a razor blade in the bag of bedding she bought for her guinea pigs. The blade piece is about the size of a quarter. Caterina says she’s lucky she noticed it before cutting herself or putting it in her pets’ cage.
She bought a bag of Kaytee Total Comfort Animal Bedding from PetSmart. When she opened it to use in her guinea pigs’ cage, she found a broken piece of blade inside. She says she contacted PetSmart and was told it was the second blade found in that bedding in a month. The bedding was pulled from shelves for a day and is now being sold again without any warnings.

Caterina claims PetSmart and Kaytee aren’t taking the matter seriously. She thinks they should “pull the bedding (off store shelves) until they find out it’s safe, as opposed to leaving it out there until they find out it’s not safe.”
PetSmart and Kaytee both say they’re working closely together to investigate the discovery. Officials say this was the first incident – not the second – and they’ve never had a problem like this before. They say it would be inappropriate to pull any product from shelves until the investigation is complete.
