WINNIPEG – A teen was critically injured after he tried to retrieve a hat and was hit by a roller-coaster car at the Red River Exhibition on Thursday evening, police say.

The hat appears to have fallen off while the youth was riding the roller-coaster and he wanted to retrieve it, but it was unsafe, Const. Jason Michalyshen said Friday morning.

Sometime later he made his way to the location of his hat, Michalyshen said.

“While attempting to retrieve his hat, he was struck,” he said.

Emergency crews rushed to the Ex grounds shortly after 6 p.m. and people were left on the ride, the Crazy Mouse, while the teen was given medical care.

Workplace Safety and Health is involved in the investigation into what happened, Michalyshen said.
