FREDERICTON — Police put the kibosh on an Ontario man’s Huck Finn-style adventure after catching him trying to travel down river from Fredericton to Saint John on a stolen dock.

The Fredericton Rowing Club reported the dock missing earlier this week.

Five days into his river cruise, David Hachey, 65, of London, Ontario was discovered by Fredericton Police’s marine unit alongside the dock, 13km down the Saint John River.

He told police he had plans to take the absconded dock further to Saint John.

Hachey was charged with theft over $5,000, drug possession, and breaching a court order. He was not supposed to leave London under his court order.

Outside court on Thursday, a grinning Hachey said he had a great time on his voyage.

“I was three days out there by myself. It was wonderful. I really enjoyed it. Just like a child. A man child. It’s in the scriptures. The bible. It was great.”

It took Fredericton police four hours to tow the nine-metre-long dock back to the rowing club.

“It’s like a Mark Twain novel,” said the rowing club’s Alan Oldham. “It’s an incredible story and as sad as it is that he didn’t complete his journey, we’re really happy to get the dock back.”

Hachey remains in custody until Friday.
