Edmonton Catholic School Board still trying to find alternative to casino fundraising

The Edmonton Catholic School Board is standing strong on it’s decision – it will not stop casino fundraising until an alternative has been found.

Casino fundraising brings the Catholic School system $6,000,000.00 every 18 months. In September the Archbishop of Edmonton asked the board to stop – saying it is morally wrong. The board agrees with the statement and has been calling on the province to provide cash instead. Catholic School Board Chair, Debbie Engel, said they have taken a step forward by getting an important partner to join their cause.

"On Tuesday evening the Public School Board passed a motion that they’re asking their advocacy committee to look to Edmonton Catholic for collaboration on possibly joining us on our advocacy efforts for adequate sustainable funding that does not rely on parent"

Money from casino fundraising is used for things like field trips, hot lunches and computers. A representative from the ministry of education has said these things are extras and not necessary. It is not likely the province will subsidize the request for more money.
