Here’s William Elliott’s path from the a university campus to the head of the RCMP.

1976: Received a Bachelor’s degree in Arts, University of Ottawa

1979: Received a Bachelor’s degree in Common Law, University of Ottawa

1981: Called to the Bar of Ontario

1988: Joins the office of the deputy prime minister, filling many roles, including chief of staff, and providing advice and analysis on economic, social and policy issues.

1992: Joins the justice department and is subsequently appointed head of legal services for the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs.

1998: Appointed deputy commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

2000: Appointed Transport Canada’s assistant deputy minister, safety and security.

2003: Appointed assistant secretary to the cabinet, security and intelligence.

April 2005- May 2006: Works as national security advisor to the prime minister.

May 2006: Becomes associate deputy minister of public safety.

July 2007: Becomes 22nd commissioner of the RCMP.
