Famous anthem flubs

Christina Aguilera’s flub of a line in The Star-Spangled Banner before Sunday night’s Super Bowl isn’t the first time someone has made very public mistake during the national anthem at a sporting event.

When she was supposed to sing the line "O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming," she instead repeated an earlier line, with a slight variation.

She sang "What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last reaming," which is the same line from earlier in the song but with the word ‘watched’ instead of ‘hailed’, and “˜reaming’ instead of “˜gleaming’.

The mistake happens about 52 seconds into the video below.

Off track

Olympic champion Carl Lewis should have run away after his infamous rendition of the national anthem at an NBA game in 1993. Midway through, Lewis promises he’ll "make it up" to the booing crowd, only to butcher the remaining few bars.

Fenway flub

Michael Bolton needed crib notes on his hand to help him get through The Star-Spangled Banner before a 2003 American League Championship Series game at Fenway Park in Boston.

His trouble starts 47 seconds into the video below.

The worst: “Barr” none

It wasn’t technically a flub, but Roseanne will likely never live down her rendition of the national anthem at a 1990 San Diego Padres game.

O, Las Vegas

Don’t worry – we haven’t left out our own national anthem.

In 1994, during the Canadian Football League’s ill-fated expansion into the United States, a lounge singer from Las Vegas attempted to sing "O Canada" before a game between the Las Vegas Posse and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

He had obviously never heard the song before, but does seem to know the tune to "O Christmas Tree" (at 34 seconds).

Big finish

At a 2005 exhibition hockey game in Quebec City between Canada and the U.S., anthem singer Caroline Marcil had more than just problems with the lyrics

The video below picks it up after she has already started and stopped the U.S. anthem for the first time — make sure you watch the entire video for her big finale.
