Superbug hits Dartmouth hospital

There has been a spike in the number of C. difficile cases at Dartmouth General Hospital, according to a representative for Capital Health.  John Gillis says there have been four cases of the bacteria in the same patient unit since May.

C. Difficile — or Clostridium difficile — causes diarrhea, high fever and abdominal pain, and is spread from person to person.

Two patients with C. difficile are still being treated at the hospital. As a precaution, the hospital has introduced enhanced cleaning and extra monitoring, says Gillis. The unit is still accepting visitors, but they asked not to visit other areas of the hospital.
