CALGARY- Parks Canada has confirmed that a black bear was killed near Banff last week.
On June 15, the 220 pound animal was hit on the train tracks about four kilometers east of the townsite. Officials say what’s unique about this case is that the incident happened on a straight stretch of tracks, so the bear would have had time to get out of the way of the train.
At this point, there is nothing to indicate the bear was eating grain. However, there is still snow at higher elevations so it’s thought that the animals might be using the train tracks as a travel corridor.
Parks Canada is currently doing a $1 million study in partnership with Canadian Pacific, to find ways to reduce the number of bear deaths along railroad tracks.
