Power outage knocks out rush hour LRT service

Power outage knocks out rush hour LRT service - image

LRT commuters became stranded and thousands of nearby homes had no power after a collision caused a two and a half hour power outage Wednesday evening.

Train service was suspended between Health Sciences station and Century Park station after a car collided with a crossing gate arm near Southgate station. The arm fell into overhead wiring and knocked out power to the train and thousands of nearby homes from 4:30 to 7:00 pm.

As a result of the outage, crossing gate arms between University Avenue and 23 Avenue were stuck in the lowered position – tieing up rush hour traffic. Crews managed to ease traffic by raising the crossing gate arms, and had all power restored a short time later.
