New McCaig Tower at Foothills Hospital opens

CALGARY – The new McCaig Tower at the Foothills Hospital officially opened Tuesday afternoon.

Scheduled to be medically operational by October 20th, the $550-million facility is expected to increase surgical capacity at the Foothills Medical Centre by 10 per cent, adding another 1,000 to the 17,000 surgeries performed annually.

“The McCaig Tower adds significant new capacity that addresses the health care needs of people living in Calgary and southern Alberta,” said Ken Hughes, AHS Board Chair in a press release. “This facility is design-built for orthopedic surgeries and orthopedic care and will provide excellence in service for patients requiring hip, knee and other orthopedic surgeries.”

The acute care facility will open in phases, beginning with a new 31-bed orthopaedic surgical unit, two new operating rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, four new day surgery beds, four new post anaesthesia recovery beds, one new X-ray room, and a new, expanded central sterile reprocessing unit for surgical instruments.

When fully operational, the eight-story tower will be home to 23 operating rooms, 93 acute care beds, a 36-bed intensive care unit, new lab and diagnostic imaging areas as well as a muscular-skeletal clinic and other out-patient services. It will also be equipped with the latest medical technology and specialized infection prevention and control features.

The acute care facility is located just west of the main building at Foothills Hospital.

Today’s opening will showcased the new orthopaedic surgical facilities and Canada’s largest centre for processing surgical instruments.
