Bridge over the Skagit River should reopen sometime next week: report - image

There’s good news this morning for British Columbians who regularly travel south of the border on the I-5.

Washington State transportation officials say the bridge over the Skagit River should reopen sometime next week.

The bridge gave way on May 23, and three people were sent plunging into the icy waters of the river.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

No one was seriously hurt.

Officials spent yesterday pushing the first of two temporary sections across the gap between the north and south sides of the river.

They say they plan to work day and night to meet their goal of getting the span in place by next week.

A permanent replacement for the bridge is expected to be finished around Labour Day.
