Montreal mayor names Marc Parent as the next top brass

Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay announced his pick for the new chief of police on Thursday, naming Marc Parent as the next top brass. Before becoming confirmed in the position, Parent will have to answer questions in front of the police commission. So far, his appointment is being well received by both of Montreal’s opposition parties.

Parent is a 26-year veteran of the force and currently serves as police director in the city’s north-end. His territory of 535,000 includes Outremont, the Plateau Mont Royal and Montreal North.

The incoming chief is beginning his new position as the force continues to wrestle with serious allegations about improper awarding of security contracts.

The mayor announced the change at the helm in the same month that hundreds rallied in Montreal in remembrance of slain teen Fredy Villanueva and that a damning internal report pointed to systemic racial profiling within the police force.

In his announcement today, Mayor Tremblay said the main reasons for selecting Parent included his many years of experience and his involvement with various communities across the city.

Parent began his career as a patroller but moved up the ranks serving on the SWAT team where he was the team leader. Parent has a Masters degree in public administration and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
