A stinging surprise in Kelowna

KELOWNA — Something’s abuzz on the streets of Kelowna.

A stinging surprise for businesses near Bernard Avenue and Gordon Drive Monday; a swarm of angry bees, the size of two footballs, invading the area.

“I just noticed the sky was getting a little dark.  I’ve never seen that many bees, honest” says Dennis Hubbard-Hirvilammi, owner of Hair by Dennis. The bees – bad for business… Hubbard-Hirvilamm closing up shop in fear of his patrons getting stung.

But the swarm did calm down throughout the day and other salons nearby did decide to stay open.

As for the bees…despite calls to pesticide companies to have them removed, they’ll be staying put, at least for now.

Officials say this is the time of year when bee hives split in two, and the swarms usually move on within 24 hours.
