The city has cancelled the business license of the Twilight Afterhours Club, located at 10018-105 Street, forcing the club to close immediately.

The decision comes after a string of violent incidents in or around the club dating back to 2007. Most recently a shooting outside the club in February killed one person and seriously injured another.

A request was submitted by the Public Safety Compliance Team (PSCT) to the city’s Chief Licensing Officer in April documenting concerns about the negative impact the club is having on the surrounding neighbourhood and a failure on the part of the owners to keep minors out of the club.

Chief Licensing Officer Randy Kirillo responded, stating “It is unreasonable to conclude that the acts of violence, by or to patrons of the club, that occur inside Twilight or within the immediate vicinity of the club are just unrelated coincidences, or that they can be written off as some generic form of downtown violence to which the owner and management have no responsibility.”

The owners of the club will now be able to appeal to the Community Standards and Licence Appeal Committee, but the club must be closed in the meantime. Normally during an appeal process the business would be allowed to remain open, but in this case the Chief Licensing Officer believes that there could be danger to the public and according to the Community Standards and Licence Appeal Bylaw the club should be closed.
