New furry and feathery friends at Winnipeg’s zoo

Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park Zoo is getting some new residents Thursday.

Two snowy owls and a baby red fox are arriving from the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society.

“We were approached by the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society about finding a home for the snowy owls and red fox here within the Assiniboine Park Zoo,” said Gary Lunsford, General Curator at the Assiniboine Park Zoo. “We’re very happy that we were able to accommodate and bring the animals to Winnipeg.”

The zoo already has six snowy owls for the newcomer to join; they will all become part of the Journey to Churchill exhibit. The little red fox will be the one of its kind. A suitable enclosure is still being worked on.

The little fox, also known as a “kit”, was rescued after it was stolen from its mother’s den by a dog.
