Jon Montgomery is coming home.
The gold medal winner in men’s skeleton arrived at Winnipeg’s James Armstrong Richardson International Airport Friday afternoon.
Donning a Winnipeg Jets baseball hat, the Olympian from Russell, Manitoba was all smiles as he showed of his medal and signed as many autographs as he could for his adoring fans.
Friends, family and fans turned up in droves to give him a hero’s welcome.
“It’s crazy! I’m not real seasoned at this sort of thing. To me, it blows my mind," said an overwhelmed Jon.
His mother Joan Montgomery says she hasn’t seen him since the Olympic ceremonies in Vancouver.
"I’m just anxious to see him. We haven’t talked to him. I hugged him after the race, but I just really want to have him all to myself," said Joan.
Jon says he plans to spend a quiet night in Winnipeg with his family before making his way to his hometown Russell, Manitoba.
A parade will be held in Russell on Sunday to celebrate Montgomery’s gold medal. And everyone’s invited.
"I’d like to encourage everybody, if you’re willing and able, to come out to Russell on Sunday and enjoy some good times with Russell folks. It would be an honour," said Jon.
