Several small family pets have died in a house fire in Kelowna’s Rutland neighbourhood.

Firefighters rushed to a home in the 400-block of Wigglesworth Crescent just after 3 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Smoke could be seen billowing from a second-floor bedroom.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, but the blaze caused fairly extensive damage to one side of the duplex.

Many small family pets, including geckos, birds and hamsters did not survive the fire.

The fire department said the blaze started in the kitchen. Its cause is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire.
