Fire at asphalt plant causes traffic diversion

A huge column of black smoke over the east end of the city had several Winnipeggers calling 911 and fire crews scrambling to respond.

The cause was a fire at an asphalt plant in St. Boniface.

The roof of a 31-foot tank at McAsphalt Industries caught fire at about 3 pm Thursday. The contents of the tank, a material called asphalt concrete, was not involved in the blaze.

The pall of smoke dissipated very quickly once fire crews arrived and contained the blaze–but they were still on scene Thursday night fighting hot pockets.

Northbound Lagimodiere was blocked at Dugald road around 3:00 p.m. for about 45 minutes.

There is no apparent cause or damage estimate yet. No one was injured.
