Garbage carts headed for northwest residents

If you live in the northwest area of Winnipeg, you’ll soon be part of the future of garbage collection.

Beginning Monday, carts for the city’s new automated garbage collection will be delivered to 42,000 residences in the area.

An information kit will be included with each cart, telling recipients:

“¢ where and how to position the cart at the road or lane on collection day

“¢ start dates for automated collection

“¢ how to apply for walk-up service for those customers who are not able to get their cart to the curb or lane due to health limitations

“¢ maintaining your cart and winter cart tips

“¢ what to do with extra yard waste that doesn’t fit into the cart.

It’s expected to take several weeks to get all the carts out. The first automated collection day is February 2.

A city release defines the northwest area as, “bounded by the Assiniboine River, the Red River, and the north and west city limits.”

Residences in the AutoBin area are not part of the new automated collection system.

The city is also looking into programs to pick up leaves, yard waste and organics.
