REGINA – How would you feel if you looked like Beyonce? It’s an important discussion mothers were encouraged to have with their daughters at a Dove Real Beauty Workshop held in Regina on Sunday.

“I thought it was a great opportunity for her to learn what self-esteem was and to see some positive role models,” said Erin Geddes, mother of two boys and two girls. She and her daughter, Emily joined over 200 other mothers and daughters and the RCMP Heritage Centre.

“I thought the bricks were quite neat,” she said of one of the activities they did. “Seeing what she interpreted, seeing what she thought was important for her self-esteem. What she wrote down, some of the things were things I didn’t think she would write down.”

Things like “dancing, and playing with my friends and family,” said Emily.

We’re not born with self-esteem, says the workshop’s facilitator, Dr. June Zimmer, also from the Girls in the Game program.

“It gives an opportunity for girls and their moms to talk about things that maybe they are insecure about. and then address ways and strategies to actually enhance those insecurities,” she said.

That’s what event hosts, MLA’s Laura Ross and Christine Tell hope will come out of the day.

“It’s a passion of mine. I’m passionate in knowing that if we have strong, young girls, we will have strong women,” said Ross.

She knows what a strong woman looks like – her own mom was her biggest influence.

“I also had a couple of older sisters who were really good role models also. And with that, in fact I grew up never thinking that I couldn’t do anything.”
