Montrealers protest against domestic violence deaths

MONTREAL – About a hundred people braved the weather on Wednesday to voice their concern about deaths and domestic violence in Montreal.

The rally was held to raise awareness about high number of conjugal-related deaths and the inability of police to protect women from being murdered at the hands of their partners.

The Quebec Women’s Shelter Association is calling for a public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of seven women killed in the past year by their husbands, ex-husbands or ex-boyfriends. Each of the women reached out to police for help but were then murdered.

The organization’s spokesperson, Louise Riendeau, said it was important to find out why these women did not get the protection they needed.

She believes that by better understanding what went wrong, authorities can improve the system and prevent victims of conjugal violence from being killed.
