SAINT JOHN’S — Lorne Middle School students now have another skill added to their repertoire. In the middle of Saint John’s Old North End they have put together a new community garden.

The project has actually been years in the making but its these last few months where the students have taken ownership of it. They started by learning about gardening in class and growing their own vegetables inside through a makeshift greenhouse.

Grade eight student Jeremy Macdonald designed the plot through a computer program and says it’s great to see his work finally come fruition.

“I wanted to have like some benches, you know some trees, just somewhere where the people in the North End can hang out instead of getting in trouble all the time,” says Macdonald who was helping load dirt into the area.

For the Old North End however this more than just a garden. It sits in a priority neighborhood characterized by its higher poverty and crime rates.

Scott Crawford who is president of the local community group “ONE Change” is hopeful this garden is the first many good things to happen here.

“To have fresh vegetables and to have the kids in the neighborhood actually being the ones that are producing it, it give us a lot of hope for the future of the Old North End.”
